Why most Pune businesses are invisible on Google — and it's not their fault

Koregaon Park has three gyms within 500 metres of each other. One shows up first on Google Maps. The other two are invisible unless you scroll past the map entirely. All three have been operating for years. The difference isn't quality of service — it's 4 hours of setup work done correctly.

Local SEO in India is still under-optimised compared to the US and UK. That's actually good news: the bar to rank in most Pune niches is low, and the steps are repeatable. This guide gives you a 90-day plan to go from invisible to top-3 on Google Maps.

How Google Maps ranking actually works

Google uses three factors to rank local businesses. Most business owners know about one of them:

  • Relevance — Does your business match what the user searched for?
  • Distance — How close is your business to the searcher?
  • Prominence — How well-known and trusted is your business online?

You can't control distance. You can control relevance and prominence entirely — and most Pune businesses haven't bothered.

The 90-day plan at a glance

  • Days 1–10: Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
  • Days 11–30: Build your citation foundation across 15–20 Indian directories
  • Days 31–60: Generate your first 10 Google reviews via WhatsApp
  • Days 61–90: Publish local content and earn 3 Pune-based backlinks

Step 1: Nail your Google Business Profile (Days 1–10)

Your GBP is your most important local SEO asset. Most businesses fill in the name and phone and call it done. Here's what actually matters:

Business name

Use your exact legal/trading name. Do not add keywords like "Best Dentist Pune" — Google will suspend your listing. If your business is registered as "Mehta Dental Clinic," that's what goes in the name field.

Category selection

Your primary category is the most important ranking signal after reviews. Be specific: "Orthodontist" outranks "Dentist" for orthodontic searches. Add up to 9 secondary categories for all your services.

Business description

750 characters. Use them. Mention your neighbourhood (Baner, Kothrud, Viman Nagar), your key services, and what makes you different. Include the words your customers actually search — "AC repair in Pune" not "HVAC solutions."

Photos — minimum 10, ideally 25+

Businesses with 25+ photos get significantly more clicks per Google's own data. Add: exterior (so customers recognise the building), interior, team, products/services in action, and your menu or price list if applicable. Geotag photos before uploading using a free tool like GeoImgr.

Hours, attributes, and Q&A

Set accurate hours including holidays. Add every applicable attribute: "Women-led business," "Hindi-speaking staff," "Wheelchair accessible," "Free parking." Seed your Q&A section with the 5 questions customers ask most often — left empty, anyone can post questions, including competitors.

Step 2: Build your citation foundation (Days 11–30)

A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another website. Consistency is everything — "Flat 4, Baner Road" and "4, Baner Rd" are different to Google's algorithm.

Priority directories for Pune businesses: Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMart (B2B), Sulekha, Yellow Pages India, Facebook Business Page, Bing Places, and Yelp India. Create a spreadsheet and log the exact NAP format used on each one — you'll need this when updating details later.

NAP consistency rule: decide on one exact format for your address and phone number before you start. Use it everywhere, forever. "020-12345678" and "+91 20 12345678" look the same to humans — they don't to Google.

Step 3: Get your first 10 reviews (Days 31–60)

Reviews are the single biggest ranking factor after GBP completeness. The businesses in the top 3 on Google Maps in most Pune categories have one thing in common: more reviews than everyone else.

The WhatsApp review method

Go to your GBP dashboard → "Ask for reviews" → copy your review link. Send this message to every customer after a transaction, within 2 hours of their visit:

"Hi [Name], thanks for visiting us today. If you have 2 minutes, we'd really appreciate a Google review — it helps us a lot. Here's the direct link: [your review link]. No pressure at all!"

A 20–30% conversion rate is realistic — 10 messages sent gets you 2–3 reviews. Response rates drop significantly after 24 hours, so send it the same day.

Responding to reviews

Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. For positive reviews, thank them and mention a specific detail. For negative reviews, acknowledge the issue, apologise, and take it offline. Never argue publicly.

Step 4: Local content and backlinks (Days 61–90)

Two blog posts that actually rank

Generic content doesn't work. Pune-specific content does. Target searches like "best [your service] in [your neighbourhood] Pune," "[your service] near [a nearby landmark]," and "[your service] cost in Pune 2026." Write 800–1,200 words, mention your neighbourhood 3–5 times naturally, add a Google Maps embed of your location, and link to your GBP from the post.

Three local backlinks

A backlink from a Pune-based website signals local relevance to Google. Sources to target:

  • Local press — Pune Mirror, Sakal, Loksatta. A local story or announcement gets you a link.
  • Partner businesses — Ask complementary (not competing) businesses to link to you. A gym linking to a physiotherapist, for example.
  • Local business associations — Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Pune Chamber, and local trade associations typically list members with website links.

What to track — and when to expect results

  • Google Maps ranking — Search your keywords incognito. Expect movement by weeks 4–8.
  • GBP views and direction requests — Check GBP dashboard → Performance. Movement in weeks 2–4.
  • Website traffic from local search — Google Search Console. Visible by weeks 6–10.

Local SEO is not instant. Expect meaningful movement by week 6–8, with top-3 placement possible by day 90 in low-to-medium competition niches. High-competition categories (restaurants, clinics, lawyers) take 4–6 months.

The businesses that win local SEO in Pune are not the ones who did the most — they're the ones who did the basics completely and consistently. Most competitors haven't filled out their GBP properly. That's your advantage.
